Google to overtake Microsoft online

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Google is set to become the world's most visited Internet property in 2007, a crown currently worn by Microsoft.

USA Today reported, err, today that Google has already just overtaken Yahoo to sit in second place. Once the traffic from YouTube is added the top spot is surely Google's, according to Danny Sullivan, editor of the Search Engine Land blog.

Microsoft may seem an unlikely leader in the web traffic space. Obviously MSN sites like Hotmail play a big part, but another factor is all those software updates that security-conscious users keep downloading.

Ryanair critic wins web battle

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Michael Coulston, who set up a web site critical of Ryanair's business practices, has won a battle to keep www.ryanaircampaign.org.

Coulston uses the site to tell Ryanair customers how they can complain about poor service.

Ryanair had complained that the domain name infringed on its trademarks and should therefore be transferred into Ryanair's possession. However,
the World Intellectual Property Organization has now rejected this claim.

Ryanair had previously managed to force Coulston to hand over control of Ryanair.org.uk.

Apple hasn't yet commented on the claims, for which Law.com doesn't provide solid proof. It attributes the claims to "individuals familiar with the case who requested anonymity"."

Chess player banned for wireless cheating

Posted by Graeme Wearden

An Indian chess player is feeling rather forked off after being caught using his mobile phone to help win games, according to Reuters.

Umakant Sharma was reportedly caught at a recent tournament when officials "discovered that he had stitched a Bluetooth device in a cloth cap which he always pulled over his ears". This let his accomplices tell him what moves to play.

HTC joins UMPC party

Posted by Graeme Wearden

Microsoft's Ultra-Mobile PC platform hasn't seen great success since it launched at CeBIT this year. Now, though, it has picked up the support of HTC. The Register reports that images of HP's first UMPC have appeared online.

It includes a detachable keyboard, which would be handy for road warriers. However, we can't tell what the battery life will be like. One of the launch units I saw at CeBIT didn't even manage to last the 45 minute presentation before konking out.

More, including some snaps via a Polish web site, here on Red Hardware.
