Recognition of the importance of SIP

Posted by RichardThurston

It's nice to see vital research being recognised, so I was pleased to see today that one of the key inventors behind the SIP protocol is to receive an award for his work.

Mark Handley, a researcher at University College London, is to receive the Roger Needham award from the British Computer Society for his work inventing the SIP protocol, which is critical for setting up multimedia communication sessions.

The annual Roger Needham award, by the way, is funded by Microsoft - Needham was the software company's first director of research.

Handley will now benefit to the tune of £5000, which will hopefully encourage some further innovation within SIP communications.

Bye bye ISDN

Posted by RichardThurston

So BT is to stop selling ISDN to home workers. I have to say it's been a long time coming, with broadband take-up now at over 10million homes. Let's think: ADSL 8Mbps (or pretending to be). ISDN 64Kbps. Not a battle of equals. OK, at least ISDN was (usually) reliable, and not subject to contention ratios. But only now it says its goodbye. I guess the only people who will be disappointed will be those who can't get ADSL access. And they are few and far between.

Cable & Wireless gets ever smaller

Posted by RichardThurston

As if axeing half its staff and 90 percent of its customers was not enough, now Cable & Wireless is shedding its capabilities as well. Out of the door this week has gone Allnet, its systems integration division. Computacenter are the fortunate recipients of the business, which has gone deeper into providing cabling services and technical building solutions of late. Computacenter argues that its relationship with customers - most of whom are corporate and governmental organisations - will remain unchanged by the change in ownership. One change in branding though - the business will now become known as 'Allnet by Computacenter'.
