Who owns your old email messages?

Posted by Karen Friar

Over in our Forums section, a member named The Chief has asked for clarification on this: "if a member of staff leaves a company, is the email address that he was using (eg joebloggs@mycompany.com) owned by him or the company?"

It's an interesting question. If your former employer doesn't shut down the address, they could scan for any interesting titibits in emails from your contacts. These, in turn, are imagining they are talking to you, and might be less guarded than if they knew they were being read by Big Boss.

What do you think? Has anyone had any experience of this, either good or bad?

Did you know? How to get indexed by Technorati

Posted by Karen Friar

This will be old news, of course, to the ZDNet faithfuls--Matt Loney pointed a while ago to Mike Barrett's advice on making your Community blog visible to Technorati. For those who don't know, Technorati is a search engine that combs the blogosphere for answers to queries--but it will only do this with blogs it is tracking. It's a good potential way to boost traffic.

So take a look at Mike Barrett's blog. That should give you most of the info you need. I'll add a couple of notes, based on queries I've received:

1) You need to have made at least one entry to your blog to index it.
2) Technorati will give you some plain html code when you "claim" your blog there. Paste this html at the end of the next blog entry you make, then preview and submit the entry.

We're working on making the "pings" to Technorati automatic. I'll let you know if there are any developments with that.

Listen carefully, this anthem will only be sung once...

Posted by Karen Friar

Had to make sure you didn't miss this. Our old blogging friend IT Anthems has blown the cover off a US spy agency's corporate tune. Have a listen (it's worth it), then come back and tell us whether the IT anthems feature should be welcomed back into the ZDNet fold.

Tell us your tips of the trade

Posted by Karen Friar

ZDNet UK members are an experienced lot. When you add up all the time they've been in the business, it comes to thousands of years of learning all the tricks and shortcuts to getting the job done.

So I've started a discussion for us to share our best tips. It could be something practical, like how to fix computer fans with a drop of oil. Or it could be more general, like stressing how important it is to network, as member 228922 did. Or perhaps you have an answer for ZDNet UK's Charles McLellan, who bemoaned the curse of the AC adapter.

Everybody has a trick that they've learned over the years. Tell us about it here.
