Google suffers super-rich brain drain

Posted by Tom Espiner

Internet entrepreneurs are queueing to leave Google, according to the Guardian.

Apparently:

"Since floating on the stock market in 2004, the company has made millionaires of thousands of shareholding employees.

Trying to hold on to the staff it has made rich is now a big concern, according to one former employee, Aydin Senkut. He joined Google in 1999 to oversee international business development. Then, the company only had about 50 employees, a far cry from the 11,000 today. Like many other early Googlers, he made a lot of money when the company went public - and was among a number who felt the need to reassess his position soon after the IPO. He eventually quit in 2005 to set up his investment firm, Felicis Ventures, that helps put new start-up businesses in touch with early stage investors.

"I spent six years at the company and I felt the time had come to try something new, so I took a leave of absence to recharge and figure out if I wanted to go back," he said.

" I realised this was the time to do something new. The thing I missed most was that feeling of a startup - building up a culture."

McKinnon to appear at Infosec

Posted by Tom Espiner

Gary McKinnon has been confirmed to appear on the hackers' panel at Infosec.

McKinnon, who is likely to be extradicted to the US to face charges of hacking US government computers, will face IT security professionals on Friday.

You'd expect him to be in for a rough time, but the portents are that he will get a fairly sympathetic reaction. In a poll of Infosec attendees, 75 percent said he should not be extradicted to the US.

McKinnon claims to have been looking for evidence of UFOs when he accessed the military files.

Oracle to join Jericho forum

Posted by Tom Espiner

ZDNet UK has heard a rumour at the Infosec conference -- apparently Oracle is just about to sign up to the Jericho forum. Jericho proponents preach the gospel of deperimeterisation -- their essential message is that not only is a hardened perimiter is not enough to mitigate security threats (an idea that's generally accepted in the security community), but also that the notion of having a perimeter at all will become increasingly outmoded.

Oracle's identity management evangelist Des Powley is going to be speaking at the Jericho forum event at Infosec -- a sign that the two organisations have definitely forged links. We wait with bated breath for an Oracle/Jericho announcement about a more formal arrangement.
