Specs released for £99 laptop

Posted by David Meyer

We finally have specs for the Elonex One laptop (previous story here), which is being pitched at the educational sector.

Apparently the thing runs on a 300MHz LNX (nope, me neither) processor and boasts a whopping 128MB of DDR2 RAM. And a single gig of storage.

The Eee has got us used to the idea of a relatively low spec producing decent results with the right (read: not MS) OS, but this is ridiculous. The good news, however, is that it has a "splash-proof membrane".

And it costs under £100.

Tiscali boss gets the boot

Posted by David Meyer

Tommaso Pompei has been ejected as CEO of Tiscali, to be replaced by current board member Mario Rosso.

Apparently shares have risen on the news. Hard to say, but it's difficult to see this as entirely unconnected with all the rumours that have been swirling around a possible sell-off or break-up of the ISP group. Pompei's interview with the FT not long ago seemed to stoke this speculation - something I blogged about here.

I would anticipate further news on this shortly.

Windows Live / Hotmail problems

Posted by David Meyer

Here at ZDNet.co.uk we've been wondering why we've been getting so many hits today on old stories about Hotmail and MSN problems. I had my MSN/Windows Live Messenger on from the start of the day and all seemed fine.

Well, I just got home and yes, it's all gone pear-shaped - guess I'd signed in early enough from work to avoid difficulties. There's a story or two out there already on the issue, but no-one seems to know what's going on, other than the fact that loads of people are having login (and apparently logout) problems. We'll let you know more as soon as we're more clued up ourselves!

Trolltech launches Qt for WinMob

Posted by David Meyer

Just got the official announcement from Trolltech that their Qt application development framework now supports Windows CE / Windows Mobile.

"Qt for Windows CE is another milestone in Trolltech's vision of 'Qt everywhere'," said Trolltech co-founder and CEO Haavard Nord today. "It will allow application providers to reach out to even more devices by enabling their applications to run across yet another operating system without rewriting the code."

Of course, ZDNet.co.uk readers will already know about this augmentation of Qt. You saw it in action in this video a week or two ago.

Danish SMEs get comms haggleshop

Posted by David Meyer

In Denmark, a website called Forhandlingsstyrke.dk - it apparently translates as "bargaining power" - lets mobile and internet providers pitch to small to medium sized businesses based on their anonymously posted consumption patterns.

According to Mobile Today, the UK could get a similar service if the Danish version takes off. It's certainly a novel concept.

By the way, if any of you speak Danish, do let me know more about this site! Them intarwebs are pretty thin on free Danish-English translation services.
