The trials of a long-term mac user

RIP Steve Jobs

Posted by utzy

Well no actually but some goon at Bloomberg mistakenly posted his obituary and whoa... even the share price fluttered. Flattering to know he had a 17 page life summary already in the works at the agency, and since he had a cancer scare a year or so back it must have been kind of eery for all concerned..

What would we do without him ?

Does your computer do what you want it to?

Posted by utzy

This was going to be a post about the next update to the new Apple MacBook Pro but it got me thinking that in addition to the computer as a tool postings I am wondering after 15 years of computer use, does my computer do what I want it to ?

Given the majority of us email, surf and write documents I think we can safely say that it does that well. Add the amateur image stuff -photos and video -thanks to programmes like iPhoto and iMovie with a little tutorial that is no longer in the domain of the pros.

Here are a few things I'd like my PC/Mac to do but currently doesn't from small to big stuff:

1 Remember its network settings what ever stuff I do to it and tune itself to optimum internet speeds.
2 Fix it own problems via on online fixing centre especially when my bluetooth keyboard flakes out.
3 Syncronise all my stuff on two computers - you can do this just its always very tricky.
4 Back up and restore on one click - Apple is getting there with features like Time Machine
5 Advise me to an optimum filing system and weekly clean up ideas.
6 Teach me really useful stuff I don't know about the functions I could access on the PC after the computer having looked at what I do best or worst
7 An artificially intelligent calendar programme including all those things you want or have to do but forget.
8 A wonderfully simple and beautiful web site building programme.
9 Do all my business expenses electroncally so there is no need for paper receipts.
10 Full multi touch recognition without the finger prints (think that one may be something to do with humans and their hands)

Not much to ask don't you think ? What are yours ?

Oh yes and here's a pic of the newly remodeled MacBook Pro out sometime in September.

September soon - is this the new iPod nano ?

Posted by utzy

I have a theory that Apple feeds these pre- release frenzies and puts a blurred photo out on the waves of the internet to turn up the heat on rumours. But with the new buying season round the corner and trumpets at the ready for Christmas O8 Apple will be expected as marekt leader to roll out their new iPods soon. For a while now pundits have been talking up a return to the old format of the 2G slim nano (citing coin pocket fits on jeans). Not sure what they meant for the video mode - horizontal viewing ??

But my biggest question for this image is why the CURVED SCREEN ?

IPOD NANO 3G

Thanks to the KevinRoseblog for the image.

How do YOU test your broadband speed ?

Posted by utzy

I changed my broadband provider and have had emails galore and two engineer visits to the house which has I think been able to get my promised 12Mb connection up to at least 10Mb from the 4Mb I was getting.

Following discussions with engineers, marketing and tech people how does one honestly test your connection speed ?

Any offers very welcome...
