Ab-normalization at Experts Exchange - part 8

Posted by nico5038

The question today:
Trying to use CASE statement in ADO execute command

It almost gets boring as this is another "classic" example of redundant data trouble.
Why have a table field filled with the same value as another field when empty?

The first question I would ask before advising such a questioner is why a field is occurring twice in the table. The tell tale field name "Salesperson2" indicates normalization hasn't been applied.

But, you're having a bad day when you're advised by the #1 MS Access expert at Experts-Exchange. This "expert" will give you as solution the code to update the field in the table and won't mention the data redundancy and the trouble this can cause. Obviously he's never worked with databases in the real world as when there's a need for a "Salesperson2", it's almost sure that in the near future a "Salesperson3" will be requested by the users and all code can be changed, etc., etc.

Is the questioner helped by this ? Yes, in the short term, but it's sure he'll be back and that makes EE happy as they will continue to collect their $$'s.
For smarter people there are sites like bytes.com where the membership is for free and the experts are cooperating to provide the best answers.

Still proud to be suspended from this "quality site" where wannabee experts rule and "quality" is just another word from the dictionary.

Experts Exchange caught me...

Posted by nico5038

I was "busted" today with a duplicate account at Experts Exchange :-(
At least that's what they call it. As my nico5038 has been suspended I'm not having an Experts Exchange account so how can that dropped account be a dupe ? ? ?

I know they use IP addresses and logs to trace me, but be sure that I'll be creating new accounts just as many as I need to read the questions and answers they try to hide with their "You need to pay" lie. And there are ways to surf the web anonymously...

Back to the status of the "Change email address request" I mentioned in a previous blog, they still respond to nothing I send them, so they're really scared that opening a communication channel (my email) will hurt them....

Guess the EE staff still doesn't realize that by not changing my email address in my profile they are showing how pathetic they are in handling criticism and their inability to perform as a "professional" organization.
It would have saved them a lot of exposure when they would have simply changed "yahoo" into "gmail"...

Ab-normalization at Experts Exchange - part 7

The question today:
Access copy from subform to Main form

Another "classic" example of redundant data. Why have the same field on a main and subform?
The first question I would ask before advising such a questioner is why storing the same value twice.

But, you're having a bad day when you're advised by the #1 MS Access expert at Experts-Exchange. This "expert" will give you as solution the code to move the field and won't mention the data redundancy and the trouble this can cause...

Is the questioner helped by this ? Yes, in the short term, but it's sure he'll be back and that makes EE happy as they will continue to collect their $$'s.

Experts Exchange and ostrich policy

Posted by nico5038

My mailing log:
2008-11-29 I asked the person that suspended me at Experts Exchange to change my emailaddress in my nico5038 profile from "yahoo" into "gmail"
==> No response

2008-12-04 I asked the admins/moderators to do this change
==> No response

2008-12-09 I posted a blog asking the admins/moderators to do this change
==> No response

2008-12-12 I asked the owner and administrator to do this change
==> No response

2008-12-14 I created this blog guess what I do expect.....

It's obvious that Experts Exchange doesn't "appreciate" critical comments about the site. By not changing my email address in my profile they think they can "cut me off" from others that want to contact me. They already removed links from my comments and where ever they can they try to "cover up" their actions.
It's however remarkable that the latest customer review at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B00006BLAS/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful/105-1934369-9253243?_encoding=UTF8&coliid=&showViewpoints=1&colid=&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending) are all negative and that's proving that "covering up" doesn't work in the long term...

I'll keep you posted about the progress of my change request, as I'll mail the link (as usual) to all Expert Exchange staff members.

Ab-normalization at Experts Exchange - part 6

The question today:
Filter with Multi Field Combo Box

It looks like a complex combo problem, but all needed is a concatenation of two fields in the combo's query and the positioning of the form on the selected row from the combo box.

The #1 Access "expert" creates an attachment from a part of the NorthWind sample database containing a form with a working combo box with this elaborate explanation:

test this

So no credits to Microsoft for the database and no syllable in the combo's code about the how and why...
All Microsoft code behind the form holds one or more lines of explanation, the #1 Access "expert" explains nothing...

Even the simple solution to place a combo box using the Access wizard and choosing the option "Find a record on my form ..." isn't mentioned.
Again a sample how an "expert" keeps a questioner hooked up to Experts Exchange as he's too lazy to teach the questioner how to cope with this problem. Or is this "expert" incapable of explaining how to use the Access wizards...
