Pre-computer era: Field Service Dept, Sperry Gyroscope Co (aeronautical and marine instrumentation) / Engineering Journalist / Designer & Editor of house magazine for Gallaher (no connection with the present cigarette smuggling scandal!) / Technical Editor, Elliott Automation / Copywriter in Bouverie Street ad agency / Created own Industrial Advertising Agency.
First computer: Commodore 64, followed by early IBM PC with twin 5,1/4” floppies. Upgraded to faster IBM AT with 10MB HD, running at an amazing 4.77MHz! / 1982 wrote first program: time sheet management and invoicing system for firm of accountants / Series of programs for setting up CNC front ends for use by pipe-bending machine company, Plymouth / Designed and edited C Magazine for Zortech Ltd, London / Trained staff of management accounts company in Exeter on use of DTP for production of company reports / Designed, developed and wrote company management system in FoxPro, including dynamic telephone ordering system / Designed and edited instruction manuals for GFK Technology, Dublin / Designed, wrote and produced multimedia presentations with graphics, voice-over and background music, documentation and training presentations for the Exeter company’s Oracle based management information systems as applied to Further Education; created Help System for time-tabling module using RoboHelp / Designed and wrote instruction manual for Warner Music artists royalty system / Commissioned by Future Publishing to write a series of articles on graphic design for PC Plus magazine, followed by two books: “The Complete Guide to Desktop Publishing” and “All you need to know about PCs” / Manager for company promoting broadband in conjunction with South West Regional Development Agency / Two and a half years of supplying weekly photographic cartoons to Amateur Photographer (no connection with the current syndicated American strip cartoon, brought in following promotion of previous editor, which replaced my cheerful and informative penguin with a permanently discontented duck).
