Professional Biography

Further education HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Worked five years in a further education college where lock-down skills were honed. Two years employed in a small business supporting all sorts of small and medium businesses where WAN, routing, and security became the most desired skills. Since Sept 2001 started my own small business supporting local businesses. A major skill is adapting or learning how to fill the needs of the differing types of clients we have and supporting some of their more unusual software. All of the above were Microsoft-based networks. In 2006 I was repairing an Exchange server for an Edinburgh ISP who passed me an Ubuntu 6.04 CD. After trying it for a couple of days I decided to migrate totally to Ubuntu. This taught the importance of using accepted standards for data storage so that e-mail, calendars, documents and the like could more easily be moved to a different system. Where I had previously feared a visit from FAST, I could now relax that all my software is FOSS. I now use Linux-based tools for all sorts of jobs even on Microsoft-based networks. Recently built a Linux server for an Edinburgh structural & civil engineering company which regularly backs up their NAS devices and has a share for the Small Business Server to back up to. This Linux server also has KVM-based virtual machines which can use the backed up data so as to emulate any of the NAS's or MS SBS server should any of them fail. I remotely administer it by SSH. I am a Sophos Anti Virus Silver Partner which basically means I am a reseller, but can assist with virus issues regardless of a client's chosen A-V solution. Any hardware or software a client wishes to purchase is bought in as needed so we never try to force anyone to buy what they don't need in an attempt to clear the shelves - we have no shelves!
